The Winter Advantage: Use When It's Cool

Residual herbicides work by creating a barrier in the soil that kills weeds as they germinate. Most weed control products need warmer weather, but Gem Granules are specifically designed to be applied to moist soil in cooler temperatures, typically between October and January.

Why now? Applying in the cold ensures the active ingredient, propyzamide, can accumulate gradually in the top layer of soil, providing maximum, long-term control of germinating weeds right through to the growing season. Do not apply to frozen or snow-covered ground.

Safe For Trees And Shrubs

Non target plants are protected by the depth of their root systems, meaning application can be made over the foliage of tolerant species. Gem Granules can be used in and around Christmas trees, amenity vegetation such as shrub beds in parks, and in forestry situations.

Amenity plantings and Christmas tree plantings need to have been in their final planting position for one season and need to be firmly established. When planted in the spring, they may be treated the following autumn.

In forestry use, areas that are going to be planted with cell grown trees can be pre-treated before planting. Bare root plants only need to be in for four weeks before treating.

Zero Mixing. Zero Fuss. 100% Simple.

As a granular herbicide, there is no mixing of liquid chemicals. Simply use a granule applicator to spread the granules on the soil around the tree or ornamental, or along the hedge line. The granules will then dissolve slowly into the soil, providing a protective barrier to new weeds growing. Always read the label before applying any herbicide.

As the application can be made over the foliage of established, tolerant species, their deep root systems are naturally protected. Gem Granules will not control many weeds that are already established. Take a look at the table below to check which species can be controlled.

Choose a day when there is no rain forecast for the following 24 hours and if you're planning on mulching, apply Gem Granules prior to putting mulch down and water in after application for the best long-term results.

Gem Granules come in 1kg and 5kg pack sizes. The smaller 1kg pack will treat approximately 260 trees, whereas the larger 5kg pack will treat around 1,300 trees.

Use at a rate of 37.5kg per hectare or 3.8g per m2 and spread evenly.
