Why Do Weeds Need To Be Controlled?

Weeds such as docks, nettles, ragwort and buttercup are often seen in paddocks and pasture and, if left alone, they will spread and take over the whole field. A weed problem is usually a sign of an overgrazed and poorly maintained paddock. Controlling weeds is also crucial as where weeds grow, grass does not.

How To Remove Weeds:

There are 3 ways to remove weeds:

1) Dig the weeds out by hand- this method is very time consuming and therefore is only practical when the weed population is very small. If you are digging out ragwort it is essential that the weed is removed from the field once it has been dug up as it becomes more attractive to horses to eat as it decomposes, however it is still lethal.

2) Cut the weeds down- removes the visual problem quickly, however it is not practical as the perennial weeds will just regrow.

3) Spray with a herbicide- this is the easiest and most effective way of tackling weeds long term. Grazon Pro is an excellent selective weed killer for control over perennial weeds such as docks, nettles and thistles but is completely safe for grass. We recommend applying Grazon Pro from April-October in good conditions to a dry leaf. If you are specifically targeting ragwort, we advise using Thrust, a strong selective herbicide that is particularly effective on ragwort. To help the active ingredient be drawn into the leaves more effectively, we advise using Activate-g.

Horses and other livestock will need to be removed from the treated area until any poisonous weeds, such as ragwort, have died and become unpalatable.

We recommend using a strong selective herbicide such as Grazon Pro to control paddock weeds including docks, thistles, nettles and dandelion.  For control over ragwort, we advice using Thrust (a selective herbicide particularly effective on ragwort) combined with Activate-g herbicide enhancer.
