Guide to Autumn Lawn Renovation
Scroll to the end for an explanation of each step.
Step One
Start your autumn lawn renovation by scarifying thatch, dead matter and moss. Once you've done this, get your mower out and cut the lawn on the shortest setting.
If you don’t scarify your lawn, organic material and moss can build up creating a matt which prevents light and nutrients reaching the soil. Read more about scarifying here.
Step Two
Now repeat the scarifying process and use a rotary mower to collect up all the debris.
Remember that scarifying removes the dead matter from your grass so you may think your lawn looks a little patchy afterwards. This is a temporary side effect that you will resolve through the next steps.
Lawns can look a little patchy after scarification
Step Three
Select a good quality grass seed to overseed. Premier Lawn and Landscape seed is exclusive to Agrigem and is perfect for general overseeding. It contains 80% perennial ryegrass and 20% strong creeping red fescue – a great balance for a resilient healthy lawn. Overseed at a rate of 35-40g/m2.
Read more about overseeding here.
Step Four
Apply Pre-Seeder Pro at a rate of 35/m2. Nutrigrow Pre Seeder Pro is formulated with magnesium, zinc, an organic base, and seaweed for superior turf establishment. The organic base and seaweed components enhance soil health and nutrient uptake, while nitrogen and magnesium provide the components to enhance soil for establishing healthy photosynthesis in new turf.
Step Five
Now it's time to apply Top Dressing. This process helps improve your turf's resilience to disease, aids germination, and enhances aeration and drainage. Aim to lightly cover the seed to get good seed-to-soil contact. If this is not done, you will need to roll or rake to make sure that the seed is right down to the soil and not lodged in the grass that is left. Take a look at our guide to top dressing here.
Step Six
You're nearly finished with day one - just one more crucial process to go. Apply Emerald Pro at 50ml and Abzorb at 100ml in 5L water to cover 100m2. Emerald Pro is organic, natural, and highly effective at optimising growth conditions for maximum quality and grass yield. Why apply a wetting agent? Take a look at our explainer blog here.
Step Seven
Water daily if there is no rainfall, ensuring that all areas of the lawn are covered. The amount of time that you need to water for depends on the flow rate of your hose pipe and sprinkler, but as a rough rule of thumb, it needs to be on for about 15-20 mins. Alternatively, place a rain gauge on the lawn while watering and when you have 5-10mm in the rain gauge, that is enough!
Step Eight
With most of the hard work done and two weeks' worth of watering complete, it's now time to repeat the same application of Emerald Pro - at 50ml in 5L water to cover 100m2.

Step Nine
Now the hardest part for all lawn enthusiasts - leave the lawn equipment alone for the next two-three weeks!
Your grass needs this time for new seedlings to put down roots. If you want to check and see if it has achieved this, try pulling the new shoots after a few weeks - they should remain in the soil and not come away easily.
Step Ten
Last but not least, give your newly renovated lawn a feed with Nutrigrow 9-7-7. This fertiliser releases nutrients over a six week period, helping your grass to develop the resilience it now needs to resist the toughest winter days - and return green and lush in spring. You can use blend or compound fertiliser - read our guide to the differences here.
